You keep hearing the whispers, the talking heads, and a some raised voices saying that “Christians don’t practice self-care.”
Truly, we are to be selfless, self-donating, self-emptying and that the self, in fact,
must die…to self.
While all of this IS true, caring for ourselves does NOT diminish our ability to do those very things.
Let’s correlate some things, take off the blinders, and see…
The woman upset at life, emotionally eating, gaining weight, refusing intimacy - unhealthy!
The woman stressed by kids, escaping into her phone, comparing and despairing - unhealthy!
The woman working long hours, unsatisfied and over-tapped with her home descending into chaos - unhealthy!
The woman with her mind continually on her flesh, the weight of additions looming, checking out from opportunities and deeper calling - unhealthy!
Need I go further?
These are women who do not Catholic self care! These are they.
Are you contained within those lines and yet expecting your greatest work for Christ is coming from those places?
I’ll wait right here and watch. I’ll observe the lack of self-care and see how that goes for you.
I have tried some of this before myself…and IT DOES NOT WORK! You will hate the places it takes you.
Self-care is actually all about doing the things that will help you be in better health—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. – 3 John 1:2
The kingdom is now. The kingdom is here. Treat yourself as a queen who takes time to do things RIGHT and WELL.
Chose your approach to life - (FAT) Apathetic - showing or feeling no interest, enthusiasm or concern or (FIT) Ignited - aroused, inflamed, activated.
The Gospel of Luke 9:62 imparts plainly what Jesus thinks, “No one, having put his hand to the plow and looking back is fit for the kingdom of God.”
Do not conduct your SOUL care and forget your SELF care or you’ll imbibe one unhappy, unhealthy and unholy woman.
Prayer, works, silence, retreat, adventure, formation, fitness, rest, challenge, study, and more constitute Catholic self care.
